LICORICE: An Original Poem for Halloween

I'm posting late today due to computer problems. My computer is with the "geek squad" again--for the second time in one week. I had to borrow my husband's MacBook so I could post for Poetry Friday. It's so frustrating being without my computer. I hope I get it back soon. I can't get any writing done!

Here's a poem for Halloween from my unpublished poetry collection about candy--tentatively titled Sweet Dreams.

LICORICE
By Elaine Magliaro

I bite the licorice stick,
close my eyes and chew.
I taste...
Darkness,
A cold autumn night,
Shadows of black cats,
The flutter of witches' capes,
Ghosts wailing in a graveyard...
All the spooky flavors of Halloween.

The Poetry Friday Roundup is at A Wrung Sponge this week.

"Sweet Dreams" sounds like a great name for a candy-themed poetry collection! Your poem makes me want to have some licorice. Very nice.

Licorice DOES taste like "shadows of black cats"! I love that! You have forever changed my licorice-eating experience, Elaine. See you at NCTE! A.

I love the first couple of lines about tasting darkness. Good luck with the collection. If you need any candy-testers or advisers, I volunteer!

Great poem! We're handing out licorice on Halloween, so I'll be thinking about it next week I'm sure. And I, too, think the title of your book is very creative and fits perfectly with the theme of your poems. (I've always wondered if it is ok to post poems that haven't been sold yet, or are they then considered "published"?) Hope your computer is back and working soon!

Elaine, I love this.

Shadows of black cats,
The flutter of witches' capes,

Those are my favorite lines. So evocative! Can't believe you're having computer problems again. Hope they disappear soon!
