Remembering My Mother with Poetry and Pictures

Mary Stella Kozicka Drabik
1918-2017

One year ago today, my beloved mother passed away. It seems like only yesterday that I said goodbye to her. She was loved by everyone who knew her. My mother was a selfless individual who was devoted to her family. I miss her more than words can say.

MOTHER
by Lola Ridge

Your love was like moonlight
turning harsh things to beauty,
so that little wry souls
reflecting each other obliquely
as in cracked mirrors . . .
beheld in your luminous spirit
their own reflection,
transfigured as in a shining stream,
and loved you for what they are not.

MOTHER'S DAY
by David Young

      —for my children

I see her doing something simple, paying bills,
or leafing through a magazine or book,
and wish that I could say, and she could hear,

that now I start to understand her love
for all of us, the fullness of it...

Elaine, I extend my condolences and hope that your photos bring back wonderful family memories for all. I enjoyed reading the poems on Mothers. I still think of my mother and look at the old photos as a way to connect with her spirit.

Elaine, this was a lovely tribute to your mother and a celebration of her life. My mother died 36 years ago and there are days when I still feel her loss keenly--though I also feel her love. I can so relate to David Young's poem and the desire to talk to my mother, especially now that I'm older. Thinking of you on this day and hoping that you feel the warmth of your mother's love and all your beautiful memories.

Thanks, Molly. My mother had a good long life. She was nearly 99 when she passed away surrounded by loved ones.

I enjoyed these wonderful photos of your beloved mother. She looks very full of life (and I can see a family resemblance!). Glad you can feel close to her so many ways, including poetry.

Thank you for sharing the poems, memories, and photos. Your mother always had a smile on her face and/or in her eyes. What a good long life she had, and how lucky that she got to know her great grandkids!

A wonderful tribute. I also lost my mother last year. Learning to deal with that void in my life. I also find comfort in the photos and the memories they evoke.. Best wishes for 2018.

Your mother's family photo (is that your mother in first communion garb?) reminds me of my Babci's wedding picture. You are lucky to have so many photo reminders to console you. Take care.

Thanks for sharing these lovely photos of your Mom (she looks like she was a lively and fun person) and family, and the poems too! I think the photos can help just a bit, I keep one of my Dad who I lost last year near my dest so i can look at him frequently.
