Small Graces: A Painting & A Poem

FYI: I was the lucky bidder who won the painting (seen below) that Grace Lin created for the Small Graces February auction.

Small Graces Painting for the February Auction

For Poetry Friday this week, I thought I'd post the "Small Graces" painting that will be auctioned off in March--along with an original poem that the painting inspired.

Standing on the sidewalk
listening to raindrops patter
on my polka-dotted umbrella.
The falling sky tap dances above me
in silvery shoes.
I hear the steady beat...beat...beat…
feel the rhythm of the rain.
My yellow-booted feet
want to waltz me down the street!

NOTE: The Small Graces auction for the March painting will begin on Monday, March 9, 2009. I will post a link to the auction page on Monday.

I like that poem. I want some yellow boots today.

Congrats again on winning that painting.

(P.S. Let me know if Tricia does NOT get back to you, but I'm sure she will.)

Jules,

Thanks. I can't decide whether to keep the painting for myself or to give it to my daughter as a gift.

(P.S. I just sent you an email.)

I want yellow boots and a polka dot umbrella! What a sweet poem; a great idea to match it with Grace's painting.

Stella & Jama,

Thanks. I'm glad you both liked the poem. I was getting ready to write up a post about the March Small Graces auction when I took a long look at Grace's painting--and was inspired to write a little rain poem.

I'm starting to love March's anticipation for April's Poetry Month almost (ALMOST) as much as April herself!

And I'd LOVE to have an original Grace Lin for my inspiration! Guess I better get ready to bid!

Mary Lee,

I'm just starting work on my plans for April. I was set back a few paces by two respiratory infections. I know a couple of other bloggers with really ambitious plans for National Poetry Month.

I love Grace's art. And I just love the little painting I won in the February auction. It makes me happy to know that my money is going to a good cause.

I love this, especially:

The falling sky tap dances above me
in silvery shoes.

The idea of rain being the tap shoes of the sky--how fabulous is that!?

Thanks for sharing, Elaine!

Thanks, Laura! It was sixty degrees here in Massachusetts the other day. Now it's snowing once again. No raindrops today. Just when I thought spring was almost here!

Hi Elaine,
What a lovely poem--I should have you write a poem for each of the images! So sweet! I'm glad you won one of the paintings...but I hope you don't end up with all of them!

Best,
Grace

Thanks, Grace. Your paintings inspire poetry! I'm not the only person eager to have a Grace Lin original. There a plenty of bidders out there.
