Poetry Friday: Autumn Celebration

AUTUMN CELEBRATION
by Elaine Magliaro

In October, colored leaves
Fall from oak and maple trees…
Bright confetti shaken down
From their boughs. All over town
Trees are celebrating fall,
Decorating every wall,
Sidewalk, yard, and flowerbed
With pumpkin-orange, gold, and red.
We stand out in the falling leaves
And catch confetti on our sleeves,
In our hands and in our hair.
We party till the trees are bare.

I love autumn in New England! I love the colored foliage. I love watching my "grandgirls" playing in fallen leaves. The photos above were taken in October 2016. My girls had a true autumn celebration piling up and frisking in autumn leaves. I'm sure they'll celebrate again this year.

  2. Perfect, that confetti. I'm just about to go out to clean up a bit, though more will come I know. I love the poem and those grand-girl pics, Elaine!

  3. Wonderful autumn poem, Elaine. It makes me wish it would start to look more like fall around here. It's been so warm, our trees seem to go from green to brown. It's supposed to be cooler next week so maybe we'll finally see some color around here! Love seeing the pictures of your grandgirls. Grandchildren are the best!

  4. I have so many fond memories of playing in the leaves! I would make a playhouse, using long lines of leaves to outline the walls of the house and rooms, then invite my across-the-alley friend to come to "MY house" to play!

  5. Liz,
There are days when I wish I had more time to write poetry and blog--but I wouldn't change the way things are these days. I so love caring for my "grandgirls." My husband and I have a lot of fun with them. they bring great joy into our lives!

Linda B, Linda, and Mary Lee,
It has been unseasonably warm where I live. It doesn't seem like fall at all. The leaves on some of the trees around here--mostly Norway maples--started to turn brown and dry in late summer. I miss seeing their colorful foliage. Two of the things I enjoyed during my childhood autumn's were the scent of burning leaves and collecting chestnuts.
