DAWN: An Original Poem That Needs Revision

Dawn
melted stars
tucked night in tight
woke the sun,
switched on its light...
then made it shine
into this little room of mine.

I haven't posted for a few weeks. I have been going through a writing "dry spell." It has been frustrating for me. I was on a roll for several weeks working on two different collections--and then my muse went on vacation. That said, I have been really busy caring for my "grandgirls" five days a week. And in summer, I like to take them outdoors...and play with them in the pool. By the time my daughter gets home from work and we finish dinner, I'm rarely raring to write.

Still, I feel so fortunate to be able to spend so much time with my granddaughters. They bring such joy into my life. My daughter is going to take a couple of weeks of vacation this summer--so maybe I'll get into my writing groove once again.

I decided to post the poem about dawn, which I found in a computer folder of poems that I had forgotten about. I know it needs more work--but I wanted to participate in Poetry Friday this week.

  1. Well, if it's a comfort.....you're not alone. I just hate it when I stop writing daily...at my writing time for as long as I like because once I fall off the wagon it always feels like so much work to get back to that writer's high of daily creativity. The more I live this life...the more I know that it's pretty common. Your posts of your grandaughters on facebook show that you really are enjoying precious time with them. I wish, I WISH my kids could know my mother the way you and your grandkids do. You have a beauty of a find from the computer files. I'm curious to know how you will play with it ... lengthen ? Shorten? add stanzas? I like it as is with melted stars tucking night in tight. I wonder what the stars finally say or if they leave silently with daylight awaking in the room?

  2. Linda,

I'm not sure how I'll change it. It's funny how I can write a poem, file it somewhere for a period of time...and then forget that I ever wrote it.

  3. I love being with my grand-girls, too, Elaine, & love seeing all about yours on FB. This is a wonderful poem you "found". I love the idea of dawn melting'stars and tucking night in tight, gorgeous image!

  4. My grandparents lived very far away when I was young, and I rarely saw them, I wish I could've made all sorts of wonderful memories with them, like you and your grandgirls!

And oh how I wish I could be one of those people who just sits down and writes methodically, every day, like clockwork. My muse doesn't like keeping to a schedule! ;-)

  5. I can relate to the struggle of making time to write, and I don't have granddaughters to enjoy instead! I do like the beginning image of dawn tucking tucking in the night.

  6. Whew. Glad to know I'm not the only one who looks at a piece of found writing and says to self, "I wrote that?" :-)

You know you'll get your writing groove back on. Enjoy everything else until you have time to make that happen. You know that everything you do and feel is actually pre-writing!

  7. I like your little ditty and the rhyming. I'd like to know more about your room. Some detail that is unique and evocative of the space of a poet, other than "little". Happy writing this summer.
