This week has been free of nanny granny duties for me as my “grandgirls” are up in Maine with my daughter and son-in-law. I thought I’d post a couple of summer poems written by Lilian Moore—one of my favorite children’s poets—for them.
IF YOU CATCH A FIREFLY
If you catch a firefly
and
keep it in a jar
You may find that
you
have lost
A tiny star.

MINE
I made a sand castle.
In rolled the sea.
"All
sand castles
belong
to me—
to
me,"
said the sea.

I miss Julia and Allison SO much. I can't wait to see them tomorrow. Fortunately, my daughter has been sending pictures of the girls to me and "Papa."
The joys of being nanny granny! Your chosen poems stir fond memories of my childhood summers filled with fireflies and the longing for our short visits to the sea. My grands don't know about fireflies; we don't have them here in Portland... I doubt they've ever seen one (🙁). But they do know much about the sea, how it claims their sand creations and tries to take their pails. Thanks for sharing Lilian Moore.
ReplyDeleteAlice Nine,
ReplyDeleteI am truly fortunate to live next door to my "grandgirls." We bought a place with my daughter and son-in-law a few years ago that has a spacious in-law apartment--so I get to see my girls nearly every day. It is such fun watching them change and grow. They bring a lot of joy into my life. The one thing I miss about our old home is that it was so close to the ocean.
Perfect, absolutely perfect. Exactly how children's poems should be. : )
ReplyDeleteWhat cuties. I love those poems, not one extra word.
ReplyDeleteYour 'grand-girls' are growing up, Elaine, & mine are, too. Time moves so quickly! Lilian Moore is a delight, isn't she? Those poems definitely spell summer! Enjoy everyone back home tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteLove these delightful Lilian Moore poems and the glimpse of your grand-girls. Summer and fireflies, such a delight!
ReplyDeleteWonder-ful summer poems, Granny Nanny!
ReplyDeleteWhat's not to love about Lillian Moore? I'm looking forward to my first grandchild who will be close enough to see on a regular basis. I have eight already, but they're oh so far away. Nanny Granny is such a great grandmother name. Mine is Dori.
ReplyDeleteLook at how much they are both growing. Wow. Time indeed flies.
ReplyDeleteLove these poems by Lillian Moore and the photos of your adorable grandchildren. Firefly stars, beaches and loved ones...may they fill these waning days of summer!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing Moore's poems and photos of your adorable grandgirls. Your "granny nanny" moniker makes me smile. =)
