TRUNK TALK: An Original Animal Mask Poem

I’ve been writing animal mask poems for many years. I’ve posted a number of them at Wild Rose Reader in the past—poems written in the voices of a blue whale boasting about its size, a chick chattering about how difficult it is to break out of its shell, young frogs rejoicing about their transformation from “baby” tadpoles into “mature” adults, a toucan bragging about the great features of its enormous bill, a snake talking of the stealthy way it moves around and finds its prey.

You can read those and other animal mask poems at The Great Animal Mask Poem Post & An Invitation (April 9, 2010).

Here is one of the animal mask poems that I haven’t posted before:

Trunk Talk

My trunk is a trumpet.
It’s a hand.
It’s a nose.
It’s a siphon for water…
A neat shower hose.
It can push down a tree.
It is powerful, strong.
My trunk is prehensile.
It’s flexible, long.
It can nimbly pick up the tiniest seed.
My trunk is a dandy appendage indeed!

AN INVITATION

BUD: An Original Acrostic

The weather here in Massachusetts has been unbelievably warm this week. I’ve been wearing shorts and sleeveless tops and sitting out in the sun…and finally taking my granddaughter out for walks in her stroller. I really need the physical exercise! I have also been exercising my rewriting muscles and working on the final revisions for my Things to Do poetry collection.

Today, I thought I’d post a short poem from my unpublished collection Spring into Words: A Season in Acrostics. March is usually a gray, damp, and chilly month where I live. It rarely feels like spring until mid to late April around here. Spring arrived early this year. Everyone is celebrating!

Before I bust out of my winter clothes…before I

Unzip my snug green jacket, I’ll draw in a

Deep breath and dream of the warm spring days to come.

Things to Do If You Are a Giraffe: A First Draft

I continue to work on revisions for my Things to Do poetry manuscript. I'm hoping I'll be done in a few weeks.

I had forgotten that some time ago I got the idea of writing an entire collection of "things to do" poems about animals. I had already written several and thought it might be a good execrise for me. I even read through some of the other animal poems--including mask poems--that I had written over the years and tried rewriting them as "things to do" poems. Here is the first draft of one of them:

Things to Do If You Are a Giraffe

Have long lanky legs,

Spotted hair, knobby knees.

Nibble the leaves

From the tip-tops of trees.

Be quiet and shy.

Stretch your neck up so high

You can wink at the birds

As they go flying by.

Things to Do If You Are a Grandfather Clock: An Original List Poem

I’ve been so busy lately that I have had little time to post at Wild Rose Reader or at Blue Rose Girls—or to stop by other blogs and leave comments. I hope to adapt to my new life rhythm and to be able to set aside more time for blogging—especially during National Poetry Month.

Recently, I hosted a family birthday party for my mother. She turned ninety-four on February 24th. It was fun having four generations of my family together to celebrate and toast my mother.

We had two birthday cakes. One was for my daughter Sara
who also had a birthday in February.

that my daughter made for her.

My granddaughter Julia has been growing up so fast!
She has been sitting up, rolling over, and eating solid food for quite some time.

My Little Love on Valentine's Day

I have been busy doing revisions on my Things to Do manuscript. Some poems have been cut from the collection. I thought I’d post one of those poems today.

Things to Do If You Are a Grandfather Clock

Reside inside a wooden case.
Spin metals hands around your face.
Turned your toothed gears.
Clickety-click.
Sway your pendulum.
Tick…tock…tick.
Listen to the rhythm of passing time.
Sing out the hour, clock.
Chime, chime, chime.
