Buying Books for the Holidays

I love to spend time at the Banbury Cross Children’s Bookshop in Wenham, Massachusetts. It’s a wonderful store owned by a woman with a passion for children’s literature. Her staff shares her passion for books. Whenever I need book suggestions or want to see the best new children’s titles, I head over to the store.

At this time of year, it’s nice to support local businesses and independent booksellers who may be hurting this holiday season. I’ve already bought lots of books for gift giving this Christmas. How about you?

Here are some of the Christmas and winter-themed children’s books I’ve purchased recently:
THE CHRISTMAS MAGIC
by Lauren Thompson
Pictures by Jon J Muth
STICK MAN
by Julia Donaldson
Illustrated by Axel Scheffler
CHRISTMAS TREE!
by Wendell & Florence Minor
ZELDA AND IVY
ONE CHRISTMAS
by Laura McGee Kvasnosky
THE LITTLE FIR TREE
by Margaret Wise Brown
Pictures by Jim LaMarche
A HOUSEFUL OF CHRISTMAS
by Barbara Joosse
Illustrated by Betsy Lewin

PETER RABBIT
A WINTER'S TALE
(This little story is based on The Tale Of Mr. Tod, one of Beatrix Potter's Lesser Known Tales.)
UNDER THE SNOW
by Melissa Stewart
Illustrated by Constance R. Bergum

  1. Thanks for mentioning my book, Under the Snow, on your blog, Elaine.

Teachers might be interested to know that there is a FREE Curriculun Guide and Readers Theather script to accompany the book. You can download it here: http://melissa-stewart.com/books/mammals/bk_under1.html

Best wishes for the holiday season,

    Melissa

  2. Melissa--

Thanks for the information. I'm hoping to write a review of your book. I haven't written many book reviews this fall because of a persistent respiratory infection that's left me low on energy most days. I think I finally got the right med to cure me this week.

Did you see that UNDER THE SNOW was included on the Banbury Cross Children's Bookshop's list of recommended books in its Holiday 2009 Newsletter? The owner of the shop--who is a friend of mine--was one person who recommended your book to me.

    From the newsletter:
"This lovely illustrated book about the various places animals spend the winter is a wonderful example of how to introduce nature and science writing to the young."

    Happy Holidays!
