Tricia’s Monday Poetry Stretch this week challenges us to write a clerihew. A clerihew is a four-line poem that pokes fun at a famous person. It has a rhyme scheme of AABB. The first line should end with the name of the celebrity.
I have never attempted writing a clerihew before. Here are the three clerihews I wrote this morning:
Eve,
So naive
In her birthday suit,
Tempted Adam with forbidden fruit.
Sir Isaac Newton—
There’s no refutin’—
With a force of nature had to grapple
When he got conked on the head with a falling apple.
Socrates’
Analyses
Were deducted, so they say,
Through an interminable series of Q and A.

Love these! I'm particularly fond of the Adam and Eve poem.
ReplyDeleteTricia,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like my first attempts at clerihewing.
These are great! I also love the Adam and Eve poem.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. I think you should join in on the Poetry Stretch this week. You're adept at writing poems in different forms.
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful, Elaine! I'm particularly fond of Socrates/Analyses - that's a knock-out rhyme.
ReplyDeleteYour clerihews are wonderful. They made me laugh...
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm a sucker for the word conked:)
Julie,
ReplyDeleteI love having a rhyming dictionary at hand when I'm writing poetry. Of course, if you don'tknow phonics, it's not so easy to use.
Jill,
I think conked is funnier than the word I had originally written in the poem.
I love the Eve poem, Elaine. Any mention of "birthday suit" makes me laugh.
ReplyDeleteVery cute.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm early, but here's my submission for Poetry Friday:

Love your Eve poem! I've tried clerihews in the past and had the hardest time with them! I usually like forms, but not this one. So I'm in extra awe of these.
ReplyDeleteOoh, naughty Eve! And the clerihew version of the Socratic method is quite, quite funny. You're very good at this!
ReplyDeleteVery funny.
ReplyDeleteWhen do we get to read one about Sarah Palin? :-) Or maybe she's old news. (Thank goodness...)
Laura,
ReplyDeleteIt was a challenge for me. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to come up with any clerihews that I could post.
Author Amok, Tadmack, & Mary Lee--
I'm glad you all the the "Eve" clerihew. It's a good thing I found an appropriate word to rhyme with Socrates.
As for Sarah Palin: I had entertained the thought of writing a clerihew about her...but I think I used up all my snide poetics for the three Palinoems I penned and my Joe the Plumber poem. Is Sarah Palin really old news? She keeps "rearing her head" on TV and on political blogs.
