MAPLE: An Autumn Acrostic

I’m keeping myself frequently updated on the presidential campaign and news about the gazillion dollar bailout for Wall Street. I’ve also been spending a lot of time reading political blogs. I need a good shot of hope. Can anybody spare some?

Here’s a short acrostic for autumn. It’s all I could manage today. I had a retirement party yesterday. I hadn’t planned to stay so long--but it was good to see my old teaching colleagues.

  1. Elaine,

I love acrostics, and my students do too. I like your alliteration "mad magicians". Isn't it amazing how much can be said in such a tiny poem?

We're having lots of wind here today so I hope all the leaves don't blow away. I'm enjoying the autumn temps.

  2. Hope comes from odd places. Yesterday, I found some at FoxNews.com (of all places). Although the front page claims that Obama and McCain are again even in the polls, looking at the poll results made clear that Obama's actually ahead by 4 points. Which gave me hope. (Of course, if you're a McCain fan, I suppose that doesn't really help. Sorry.)

  3. Linda,

The wind hasn't hit Massachusetts yet. It would be sad to lose most of the leaves before they cahnge color.

    Kelly,

A McCain supporter? ME? Maybe in some alternate universe. Remember--I live in the bluest of "blue" states. In 1972, Massachusetts was the only state that didn't give its electoral votes to Nixon. I remember standing outside the polling station with my McGovern sign.

  4. Kelly,

P.S. I fear there are quite a few people who won't vote for Obama because he's African American. I think racism may rear its ugly head in some voting booths.

  5. For the life of me I can't see why this is even a close race. I also fear people voting against Obama because of race. I'm holding fast onto hope. We need those debates!

  6. Elaine - Do you remember those bumper stickers that came out and said "Massachusetts Was Right" - ?? No explanation needed. I loved those.

I am SO excited about flying out to Vermont next week for some college business - it will be the first time I get to see New England in the fall. Maple trees, here I come!

  7. Jama,

I am keeping my fingers crossed!

    Julie,

I didn't have one of those, but I still have an old bumper sticker from the 1972 presidential campaign that says FLICK DICK.

I hope you have good weather next week. I love Vermont. It's such a scenic state--and its highways aren't marred by huge billboards.

  8. Acrostics were my very favorite kind of poems to do in school, and the best fun I had was doing name acrostics; our class wrote notes to each other using these in about fourth grade.

Happy retiring -- that's a hopeful thing in and of itself!
