Deep-Fried Dream: An Original Poem

I guess I’ve got eating on my mind this week. At Blue Rose Girls, I have a poem by Anne Stevenson and a brief post about food in poetry. Here, at Wild Rose Reader, I have a “poetic edible” I wrote not long ago. I hope the spirit of Wanda Gag won’t object to the manner in which I conclude my poem.

DEEP-FRIED DREAM
by Elaine magliaro

I see
Circles of deep-fried dough…
Dipped in honey
Dusted with cinnamon sugar
Covered with flaked coconut
Glazed with dark chocolate.

I see
Circles of deep-fried dough…
Frosted with maple icing
Sprinkled with colored jimmies
Filled with raspberry jelly, lemon custard, vanilla cream.

I see
Dozens of donuts,
Hundreds of donuts,
Millions and billions and trillions of donuts
Dancing around in my dream.

At Blue Rose Girls, I have a poem by Anne Stevenson entitled In the Tunnel of Summers and links to three of my other favorite poems.

The Poetry Friday Round-up is at The Well-Read Child.

P. S. Check out my Unlikely Titles post and suggest a few of your own “unlikely titles for children’s books.

  3. I came here straight from Jama's homegrown tomatoes. I'm feeling quite full, thank you both!

  4. Jules,

I enjoy poetry that delights the senses. I'm glad you liked my poem.

    Jama,

I daresay that you're more dangerous than I. You post all those yummy recipes at your blog. In fact, I printed off your recipe for the sow's ear apple pancake. I've just got to make that someday soon. I used to make a German apple pancake that is similar--but your recipe sounds even better.

    Mary Lee,

If only poetry about food would satisfy my cravings I'd be much thinner than I am.

  5. I'm with Mary Lee. I came here with my mouth already watering, and now I have an absolute craving! If only one of the 500 Dunkin Donuts in Chicagoland were somewhere near me right now!

  6. Now I'm hungry! And now, being always ready to learn :) I must google Wanda Gag.

  9. I love doughnuts...sigh...You evoked their pleasures beautifully.

  10. Lisa, Charlotte, Vivian, Jone, and Camille--

The funny thing is that I don't even like donuts that much. I don't think I've eaten one in the past year...or more.
